About PAFA

NJIS enjoys the support and enthusiasm of a dedicated Parents and Friends Association. Parents and legal guardians of NJIS students are members of PAFA.

PAFA operates independently of the school but works with the administration under the umbrella of the “Yayasan“ (not-for-profit social organization), which the school has established under Indonesian law. Accordingly, the school is directly responsible for any funds raised under PAFA's auspices. NJIS is obligated by its charter to ensure that all money raised by the Yayasan, and by PAFA, is channelled directly back to the school.

International school families are by nature mobile and may be in Jakarta for only two or three years. Therefore, parents have a right to expect that any fund raising undertaken during their time at NJIS be used to support programs while their children are in attendance at NJIS so they  may benefit from the fund raising. Accordingly, it is preferable that all funds earned under the auspices of PAFA be allocated and spent within one year of their having been raised for the general benefit of the school.

Any money raised under the auspices of PAFA is accountable to the school and is the responsibility of the school in terms of annual accounting and tax audits. All money raised by PAFA should be deposited immediately after the event at which the money was raised to the Business Office, where a PAFA account has been established. These funds are raised from parents and students in the name of the school. The school administration must approve proposed expenditures and ensure that they are of general benefit to the school and to as many students as possible. PAFA plas a major role in raising funds to support specific projects beneficial to students, faculty, and staff. PAFA also sponsors non-fundraising events to enhance the NJIS spirit of friendship.

PAFA's allocations have included a PA system, an electronic score board, contributions to the Student Council, and assistance in funding the school's piano. PAFA also provided athletic shoes, a disco light for the school's Theater, an overhead projector for classroom usage, compact disk additions to the Library.

In addition to material allocations, PAFA has been a resource for the faculty by volunteering time at school in various capacities, such as Library assistants (cataloging, reading to students) and “Room Moms“ (mothers who help support a classroom teacher by assisting with special activities and field trips). It is understood that parent volunteers assist only upon request of the classroom teacher or administration as coordinated by PAFA.

PAFA-sponsored activities have included parties at various holidays as well as assistance with the celebration of Chinese New Year and United Nations'Day. PAFA also organizes fundraising events and activities throughout the school year, such as the annual Family Fun Fair and bake sales. These activities are for the benefit of the entire student body and are dependent upon requests by faculty and administration as well as the degree of parental involvement. As PAFA is dependent upon parents who volunteer their time and talent, the activities and the degree of “volunteerism“ will inherently vary from one year to the next. NJIS could not to do all that it does without the parents, and the school is most grateful for their efforts on behalf of the school.

The structure of PAFA, when feasible, should consist of a core committee that serves to steer the organization and act as a focal point of contact for the NJIS community. This core committee should consist of a President, Vice-president, Secretary, and Treasurer, with shared duties and responsibilities. These are non-elected positions and are open to any parents who are willing to serve on PAFA.

Most importantly, PAFA serves as a channel through which parents, faculty, school administration, and the Board can communicate to promote cooperation and understanding within the NJIS community. PAFA works in an advisory capacity only, however, and does not establish school policy.
